Irwin – "the goal is still to win races"

29 April 2017

Go Back With MX1 championship leader Jake Nicholls injured it’s Buildbase Honda’s Graeme Irwin who will start Sunday’s opening moto at Canada Heights with the most points on the board.

Other riders could find the extra pressure a weight on their shoulders but the laidback 25-year-old Irishman is taking it all in his stride.

“I haven’t really thought about it to be honest,” he said from under the team awning at Canada Heights. “When Jake got hurt my phone was going off flat-out with people saying ‘this is your year’ and I was actually a bit disappointed because I felt like the people who were texting me were doubting I could do it before [Jake’s injury].

“Jake was very good at the opening round but I feel we kinda closed that gap on him at Lyng and were a lot more challenging for him and I felt that the championship was probably going to go down to either me or him.

“So I didn’t really get too caught up in it and just continued on with what I’ve been doing. It’s still too early but Jake being out hasn’t changed my approach – the goal is still to win races and there will be another 39 riders here this weekend who are going to try to stop me so that’s my focus.

“It’s never nice to see anyone get hurt and I wish Jake a speedy recovery.”
