Watch out for Wouts
15 March 2017Go Back Belgian MX2 champion Kevin Wouts made his Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship debut for the new Lombard Express Suzuki team at Culham but it turned out to be a day to forget for the 26-year-old.
We caught up with Kevin, who was also fifth in both last year’s EMX250 series and the Dutch MX1 championship, after he’d notched up a 24th in the opening MX2 race following a collision with another rider that forced him to pit for running repairs.
“It’s hard at the moment,” said. “I don’t have a good day so far. It’s the first race of the year – I can’t do any pre-season races because I’m coming back from a knee injury, I had an ACL done last year.
“I wasn’t ready to go for the pre-season so we decided to wait a little longer. So today is like the first race and all the stress is there and nothing is going as planned at the moment.
“I need to get used to the competitors and how the system is working and also a bit to the bike because I’m just a month on the bike now. It’s going really bad today but I’m sure give me like a month and things will click.”
After team boss Neil Prince worked flat-out to replace damaged triple clamps and bar clamps cracked in the collision his team was heading to the start for race two when they noticed the radiator was leaking. Quick repairs weren’t quick enough and the holding area was closed by the time they returned.
All-in-all it wasn’t the greatest of debuts for Kevin but with some extra bike time under his belt and a more favourable roll of the dice he could come out swinging at round two at Lyng on April 9.
